The GT’s first started out as Silver Rain which was formed at Joseph Rowntree School in York. The band had a slightly different line-up back then consisting of Matthew Boggan (vocals), Marc 'Eddy' Pearson (guitar), David Varley (guitar), Jonny Melling (Drums) and Nick Thompson (Bass Guitar). Whilst still attending Joseph Rowntree School, the band played a number of low-profile gigs around York throughout the late 1990's. But in 1999, our bass guitar player Nick Thompson moved away from York, and Stuart "Pie" Baker took over the role of bass player. The band then carried on as Silver Rain for a bit, playing a few local gigs with Stuart Baker on the bass guitar, but as the gigs dried up, things went very quiet for the band for a few years. Then, in January 2005, as if by fate, we decided to meet up and start gigging again, a new guitarist by the name of Kevin Gott was drafted in to play bass, and Pie's talent was not on the sidelines for too long either, as he quickly made a comeback as our new keyboard player, and a fresh start was made, Silver Rain were reborn as The Gypsy Tarmacers...The GT's for short, and the rest, as they say, is (musical) history.! Following a year of finding ourselves and our musical direction, The GT's made their long awaited comeback in early 2006, at Fibbers, Stonebow, and we continued to gig in and around York at venues such as the fore mentioned Fibbers, Cert 18, The Stone Roses Bar and The Junction. But in April 2007, Stuart 'Pie' Baker and Jonny Melling decided to leave the band. (Rumor has it, Pie was spotted leaving in his spaceship in a field near Haxby, York)..? However, Gaz Shaw was quickly brought in as our drummer, and Richard Bates began playing keyboards. Our loyal fan-base and support has continued to grow for us since we started playing gigs again in 2005.....thanks to all you GT fans.
