Cast&s powerful riff-packed pop songs with soaring harmonies and gorgeous hooks sucked you in every time, oozing good vibes and optimism. And songwriter/guitarist/singer John Power, also a founder member of The La&s (There She Goes) run by Liverpool visionary Lee Mavers, has become something of a institution as a mystic soul brother with a wide eyed vision on life, love and the universe. John, you&ve been away too long. Welcome back. ID IS ESSENTIAL!! | | | 9 | Fibbers | Tue,15th Jul | | Not had the pleasure of seeing Joe live since tha last time he supported Yoav at the Junction. That night Joe's vocals were apparently suffering from a nasty attack of man flu, not that I noticed - his singing was spot on that as I remember. Tonight though, with a full bill of health, he soared - Joe's singing, like his songs, are full of passionate enthusiasm that draws in the most stoic crowd. Not that this lot needed any encouragement - Joe's following is slowly increasing with each gig and word is getting out about this homegrown acoustic gem. After the last gig I tried in vain to book him for my girlfriends birthday party (exams intervened)- this time I don't think I can afford him! A guaranteed crowd pleaser - Do yourselves a favour, get yourselves on our email alert, check out his myspace and check him out soon! - yorknights | | 9 | The Junction | Tue,8th Apr | A top tuesday night at the junction with some fantastic acsoustic acts on display. And a good crowd in to boot - especially as its champions league night. As I'm writing this I've no idea of the score - I've sky plussed the mutha in the hope that I can make it back home without finding out the result. Fat chance. I assume things aren't going well with 5 missed text messages on my phone before finally switching it off . Never a good sign - the evil army of undead that constitute my friends never get in touch when Liverpool are having a good game...
Onto poor old Joe - promised on my dead grandmother's life that I'd make it along to his last gig, then mistress cockup made a flying visit and I missed him. Meanwhile at that gig Joe, on stage and believing I'm out there in the crowd, does a glowing tribute to yorknights and what we're all about - that's right folks, we are what the NME could've been if they worked a bit harder....
W ell with that, even with a filthy cold in tow and Liverpools most important match playing out on telly I could harly miss his next gig could I? Balls to the music, this guy could just be my next head of marketing..
Kicking off with 'in one word', Joe immediately demonstrates a very powerful vocal talent, pretty impressive as it turns out we're sharing the same cold and his voice is apparently not up to full strength. Contradictive state' starts with a treat of a monologue about when lying becomes the right thing to do, ah how I say how emphatically I agree with him but then you never know who's going to read this! The songs are stunning without exception - every song betrays the deep emotions that inspired it and this works very well with his acoustic style .Third song on and Joe's stock moves up 10% as he reveals he's a Sting fan. Now I think I was the only male Sting fan at uni, and for all the abuse it got me I think I would've been better off hanging a swastika out of my window. .
Over all a fantastic performance from a truly talented singer songwriter with a growing following. Check out Joe's myspace and itune tracks asap. - yorknights | | 9 | The Junction | Tue,8th Apr | A top tuesday night at the junction with some fantastic acsoustic acts on display.
