Saturday night and its one of two gigs to choose from - the old masters Shed Seven at their secret gig in town, or the young upstarts 'Kid Gloves' at the melbourne down Fulford way. Well, as I see the riot police heading down to deal with the army of punters descending on the city screen, I elect for the second option and check out 'Kid gloves' for the second time this week.

First off the sound is a lot better in the Melbourne than I expected. This is just about the most intimate venue to host full bands - no crowd barriers or security staff required here, the guitarist was practically sat on the lap of one of the locals...

Star
ting with 'revolution' following a moody bass amp Moment, kid gloves once again showed why they have become such a successful band around the uni, and why the Melbourne were so keen to have them back for more. Anthem after anthem, followed by an impressive Kings of Leon cover displaying, amongst other talents, a first class vocal talent, I hope these boys continue gigging as much as they are at the moment - bigger gigs and a loyal and growing fan base should follow!

Playing their first headline at the junction, Kid gloves are a new addition to the york scene, hailing from the fountain of academia that is the university of York..

First off the Junction itself, who have been working relentlessly on the venue for the past 12 months. The result is a very effective use of both the stage and dancefloor, and a first class sound which only reinforces the widely held belief that the Junction is York's best live music venue, both for the audience and the bands themselves.

Onto Kid Gloves then. Well, theres no getting round the fact that these guys are work in progress, but all the key ingredients are there. Starting with revolution - a treat for any Kasabian fan, the song was a fantastic opener, albeit let down a touch by the odd bum note and dropped stick. After the bands myspace address was announced (correctly this time, unlike their last gig apparently), things got better and better. Key here wasn't any song in particular, but the variety of the material being played. Always such a good sign from a band - new material means vitality and creativity, and Kid Gloves have this in abundance. This means a casual listener at a gig will be more inclined to see them again as there is more likelihood of new material each time. What Kid Gloves really need now are bigger audiences - they have anthems galore and just need the crowds to do them justice. Its a shame some of the audience decided to leave after the support acts (and odd too - get your moneys worth mate!) but at the end of the day this was a Monday night and I suspect they're great live on Campus. So treat yourselves and check them out soon - after tonights impressive performance I'm planning on doing just that this Saturday..
