York&s 7-piece Vudu-Blues answer to Brian Wilson&s imagination is gently developing (and selling out venues nationwide) in the hands and harmonica of Tim Fox and his "born in the wrong era" vocals. This is the sound of sex, soul and searing imagination with an arsenal of instruments including sax, mandolin, banjo, slide, piano and, of course, guitars electric and acoustic - all dressed up Tarantino-stylee. And meanwhile over in The Wallbirds camp, Doncaster cousins Anthony, Luke and Chris are taking music back to its roots, a breath of fresh air, with a hillbilly bluegrass concoction in a kinda folk rock pop crossover. This is proper harmonica-shunted country mind from blues to chaotic hoedown. Is there something special happening here tonight? We think so ... | | | 10 | The Basement | Fri,2nd Mar | | I'd heard quite a lot about Hijak Oscar so I thought I'd take my messy legs down to the City Screen. First on was SHonet, who has a massive voice and was really good, I just feel that she'd be better with a full band backing her. I've seen her with BOss Caine but I think she would do well with a full band and as the main focal point.
Next on were Tiger Bomb, they were a bit bland and boring to be honest, not really my cup of tea but they seemed to go down well.
They were followed by The Alphawaves, featuring Stu from the Blueprints, isn't York an incestuous place! They were good a bit saccharine for my liking but good nonetheless. They had catchy tunes and were likeable.
And then what I'd been waiting for, Hijak Oscar.
They sauntered onto the stage in an array of rag bag clothes and smart clothes. They are a strange group looking like the Raggy Dolls crossed with Busgy Malone! But to be honest once that harmonica started up image became a peripheral concern. They were absolutely brilliant, full of energy and very tight as a live band. I've heard some people say they are a blues band but I think that is lazy journalism at its worst. They draw on blues influences but chuck them in a big dirty mixing pot and come out with a very unique original sound. If you want to see a good new original band rather than the current plague of third rate banal indie bands then go and see Hijak OScar.
Michael Rivis. - Michael Rivis | | 6 | The Basement | Fri,2nd Mar | | Haven't seen these guys for some time, great band with a style and genre which is hard to place (goota be a good thing!). The songs vary though (sorry forgotten the names!) and some seem a lot more polished than others. Assuming theres plenty more material to come from them I can see them getting better and better - djw | | 1 | The Basement | Fri,2nd Mar | | I'd have to agree with dtw in that some songs did appear more polished than others but i think they certainyl deserved a better rating than 6! They are a very unique band in York, which has a very cliquey music scene. Most bands try and escape from York rather than play it constantly. They don't call York the 'Graveyard of Ambition' for nothing!
Overall i throughly enjoyed the gig and look forward to things to come.
