| | Location | York | | Website | http://www.myspace.com/megawattwingedavenger | | Rated | 9.0 | | Genre | Rock Metal | | Influences | Alter Bridge, Black Sabbath, Guns N Roses, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Paradise Lost | | Similar Local Acts | Conquest of Steel, In Audium, Method In Madness, Pantheon, Rolling Thunder | | Formed from the ashes of local York bands Knee Deep and Forty7three in the autumn of 2005, MWA started out as a just-for-fun side project, just playing a few covers, but following the amicable departure of bassist Adi Bury from Knee Deep (three bands is too much, even for the Burymeister!) MWA incorporated the original songs by Knee Deep and Forty7three into the set also. Our music will appeal to anyone who likes loud music they can bang their head and sing along to! | | Click here to be notified for upcoming gigs for Megawatt Winged Avenger | | | | 9 | The Junction | Sat,17th Mar | This is the second Likemind gig I have reviewed at The Junction. Tonight we
had a mixed bag of musical styles designed to suit most tastes. Rich Brookes is from Malton, and was performing a stripped down acoustic set
to get the evening going. Just him and his Gibson acoustic guitar. Rich is
a confident performer singing in a clear voice and displaying good technical
ability. He did a mixture of his own material and some covers, including a
good version of Bruce Springstein's, "Hungry Heart". The room was
appreciative of his efforts and gave him warm applause at the end of his
set. Travelling from even further away were My Favourite Runner Up. These four
young men had come from Aberystwyth in Wales. This was the furthest they
had travelled so far. They gave us a rock set in the Blink 182/Good
Charlotte/ Green Day style. There was nothing too technical in the playing,
but it was tight and well rehearsed. MFRU have bags of energy and charisma,
and they worked very hard to get the audience up of their seats. They also
plugged their album mercilessly, and despite haggling from some of the
audience members, managed to sell some. It was good solid rock, nothing too
memorable, but solid, inoffensive stuff. They lobbed a couple of covers
into the mix, "Angels", and an improvised version of "Man I Feel Like A
Woman". They were not afraid to take the piss out of themselves, which is
always a good trait, in my opinion. Another band not afraid to take the piss out of themselves, and anyone who
gets in their way, is Megawatt Winged Avenger, or Megawatt Influenza as they
were known as tonight. They had to cancel a gig earlier this week due to
three of the band member having the lurgy. They were back with a copious
supply of snotty tissues and cough sweets.
Megawatt do a good mixture of their own material and well known classic
metal covers, as well as some surprises. Tonight was a metal night. The
MWA faithful were in, and they were determined to enjoy themselves. They
kicked off with Iron Maiden's "The Trooper", always a favourite. They also
did a cracking version of the very difficult "One" by Metallica, and "Enter
Sandman" which went down very well. The Welsh lads had joined in by now and
were quickly getting wrapped up in the Megawatt phenomenon and off stage
antics. Rosco was busy diving about and scaring everybody with his orange
shorts, Elliot and Ash kept buggering off because they are wireless don'tcha
know. Elliot also gave us a weather report after one excursion outside ( it
was raining). You get the full service with MWA! They also did some of
their own material including "BIN" and their new one "I Never". They were
still playing "Sweet Child O Mine" as an encore when I left. My ears were
still ringing at 2am as it was VERY VERY loud all night. If you wish to
hear more of Megawatt Influenza, they have a CD out called "Ignorance Is
This" which is available from the band members, gigs, and selected music
stores. - Lou Sandles |
