Taking time out of his busy schedule, the internationally acclaimed Yoav has very kindly answered a few questions about his . Don't forget this Tuesday (15th) see's his return to York to play Fibbers. Don't miss this one kids..
Never ending and cliched question, but who would you name as your biggest musical influences?
Ever shifting answer, but lets go with Bjork,Radiohead,Outkast,Aphex Twin,The Beatles,The Edge for now.
A lot of musicians on the site are always keen to find out how different artists go about writing new material. Is it a tried and tested formula, or do you have a different approach to song writing depending on your mood / style of song?
Every song seems to happen differently.Sometimes it's a title that sparks something.Sometimes it's a melody or a beat that I have made,or something even more abstract like a dream I have written down.I am usually writing three or four tunes at the same time that are in different stages of competion and I flip from one to the other to keep things fresh. If I am feeling gutted inside ,that usually helps the songwriting process-I find it hard to get away from that.
Although there are a lot of artists working in a similar style / genre to yourself, you've managed to establish a truly unique and mature sound all of your own. Looking back, did you make a conscious decision to go down this route, or did you try other areas as well e.g. were you ever part of a mainstream band etc?
I did have a couple of years in New York where I fronted a band ,but as soon as I started playing some solo shows again,I felt I had moved past it-the band had been drowning out the connection with the audience.I will come back to playing with other musicians in time, but it will be an unorthodox lineup,i reckon-the kind of band you would see with Bjork or Beck.I have always strived to make something different, but never had a carefully thought out plan.Just listened to and read as many different things as I could find and keep on trying to evolve and sharpen my writing, singing, playing, drumming, sampling, arranging and so on.
A lot of people are also very interested in the technical side to what you do. What is your current set up and is it something that you're settled with or is there any new box of tricks coming out soon that you're eager to try?
My setup is bare bones and I am eager to add to it,as I am pretty comfortable with it now.I have a boss gigadelay for echo,a boss rc20xl loopstation for sampling ,and an eq pedal which I bang on when I use the microphone in my guitar (matrix ellipse blend).I have recently picked up an interesting piece of gear called a HOG guitar synth which I will break out when I get back to the UK.My guitar is key to my sound and I can make a lot of the sounds on the record just unplugged on it.I only use Lowden guitars/
2008 has been a very busy year for you so far, whats in the pipeline for the coming months?
I just keep getting busier. The record is kicking off rather nicely across Europe and Canada and I will be in Germany,Russia,France,Belgium,Scandinavia,Canada and the UK throughout August and September, after which there is talk of a proper big US tour. There is also talk of some interesting collaborations with other artists. At the same time,I am starting to finish up the writing for the next record and figure out some new trickery and who I want to record with/where /when. |
